Project Management Elevator Pitch

 

If given only 90-seconds to impart a little wisdom about what you do as a project manager and why project management is important, what would you say? As a budding project manager with an interest in delivering solutions for learning, I came up with a sample elevator pitch as if I were interested in establishing a contractual relationship with a business or organization. Hello, I’m Angelica Christie. As a project management consultant, I assume contractual oversight and accountability for planning, resource allocation, progression, and monitoring of projects that help to achieve organizational goals. Being competitive in the 21st century require organizations to maintain steady pace with changes that drive existing markets and ultimately drive the bottom line. Research shows that high-performing organizations are five times more likely to have strong cultures of learning.  My agency is committed to helping build cultures of learning and equipping organizations with enhanced abilities to learn, adapt, anticipate, and change as a competitor in today’s business environment. We will deliver effective solutions that are specific to the individual needs of your company. It would be a pleasure to arrange a time this week to further explore how we can best achieve your vision.

    You make some excellent points in your elevator speech because training would benefit an organization. I thought the approach you used with Noe's statement about fostering a culture learning environment is very relevant in today's business world. The only thing I would add, which is a preference of mine, would be to incorporate concrete data on the selling point of why training would be beneficial. My training team went from 85 to 52 trainers in the last four years, and leadership wanted to see the value. That was a hard lesson for me to learn, helping leadership show the training team's worth. In this past year, I can say we have proven our worth with data and outcomes. I wanted to give you some context on my feedback. I think about the old commercial with an older lady checking out the hamburger, saying, “Where’s the beef”? In our world, is “Where’s the data?” To prove our T&D worth and value.

  2. Hi Angelica,

    You made a strong argument by citing Noe's comments on the prevalence of high-performing organizations to have strong learning options for their staff.  It is clear from your speech that a strong training culture results in high performance, and that team members need to undergo continual learning opportunities in order to stay productive and efficient such that the organization can remain competitive.  I am fortunate that my training team is regularly in need, because we are opening new physician offices quickly, and because we are continually adding new software to help build our business.  However, it is always a struggle to ask to expand our resources in this area because it is so difficult to correlate a new training FTE or new or enhanced online training systems with some financial gain for the organization.  Noe (2020) does a great job of connecting these two concepts, showing that investment in the learning culture can provide great rewards in the productivity of the staff and therefore improve the bottom line.
